Chinese Barbecue Recipes
The warm weather is here - time to fire up the backyard barbecue and pack picnic lunches for weekend hikes. Looking for an alternative to the traditional hamburgers and three bean salad? How about adding an Asian influence to your next outdoor party? Below are Chinese barbecue recipes for everything from whipping up a batch of hamburgers with Oriental seasonings to spicing up your grilled meats with a Chinese barbecue sauce, mixing together flavorful ingredients such as hoisin sauce and sesame oil.
You can also
spice up side dishes. Cold spicy Szechuan sesame noodles go well with grilled or barbecued
meats. Chicken wings can be marinated with five-spice powder before being tossed
on the grill. Of course, no outdoor gathering would be complete without potato salad: how about
a Chinese potato salad with a a dash of hot mustard powder to spice up the
mayonnaise sauce? Or a Chinese potato salad with a tangy rice vinegar
dressing?

What's In a Name? |
| There is a strong
indication that the word "barbecue" comes from the Spanish
word barbacoa which is derived from an American Indian word for
the framework of green wood on which meat or fish was cooked over a pit
of coals. Others believe that the French should be credited - when
Caribbean pirates came stateside, they roasted animals barbe-a-queue,
head to tail, so to speak. (Source: Finger Lickin' Rib Stickin' Great Tastin' Barbecue by Jane Butel) |
