Reader Restaurant Recommendations - Western United States

California

Chico
Turandot North China Gourmet Cuisine, 1851 Esplanade, Chico, CA 95926,  ()
This restaurant is my favorite in Northern California. The menu is broad and vegetarian meals are great.

Fremont
Yen Ching Restaurant, 1616 Washington Blvd,  (510 - 490 - 8381)
This restaurant features a blend of Taiwanese and Korean fare. I've been gone from Fremont for two years and the thing I miss most is this great restaurant with fairly priced food, good service, and the world's best Cham Pong (Korean noodle dish).

Gridley
ABC China Restaurant, 14 E. Gridley Road, 95948-2604 (530 - 846 - 2254)
The Chinese food is marvelous - not your "usual" Chinese food such as chow mein and fried rice.

Los Angeles (West)
J.R.'s Chinese Seafood and Hu's Szechwan Restaurant
Delicious food at both.

Marysville and Yuba City (approximately 45 minutes north of Sacramento)
Szechwan Restaurant on First Street in Historic China Town, Marysville
This is a wonderful little hideaway run by John and his family, who come from China by way of San Francisco. They serve the ultimate Wor Wonton with noodles soup. Just don't forget to ask for the noodles; otherwise you'll only get wonton with shrimp, beef, pork slices and miscellaneous vegetables. It is especially wonderful during the winter or when one has a cold or the flue. Add the Chinese mustard and/or hot Vietnamese sauce help's to clear one's congestion and sinuses. The rest of the menu is very good too

Far East Chinese Restaurant, Corner of Plumas and Colusa Highway, Yuba City
Eva and her husband serve buffet lunches which are extremely popular, but you can also order off the menu. Surprisingly for a buffet type restaurant, the quality of the dishes is marvelous. They do not scrimp on serving fresh meats in generous portions. The vegetables are not overcooked but are crisp; there is no heavy "oily" aftertaste. The sauces are light and varied.  The soup is mediocre, but then again the entrees are soooo good. We try not to go there too often because we cannot control our appetites.

Oakland
Tin's Tea House Restaurant, 701 Webster Street, Oakland CA (510 - 832 - 7661)
I have eaten at Tin's Tea House at 7th and Webster for about 20 years.  It has the best collection of dim sum I have ever had.  Highly recommended.

Orange County
Yen Ching - located off the 22 Freeway on Glassell in the city of Orange.
The food is great at Yen Ching. I definitely recommend giving it a try. After my trip to China, I came back looking for something that tasted closer to real Chinese. After looking all over Orange County, I finally tried this place. It is a little expensive, but they have a great lunch deal on the weekdays. The quality is very good. Every item I have tried has been very tasty.

Petaluma
Thai Cuisine, 610 Petaluma Blvd., North, Petaluma (707 - 769 - 8802)
Located in the north end of Petaluma, which is about 45 minutes north of San Francisco. A Victorian home made into a restaurant, with several dinings rooms: lace curtains and lots of Oriental decorations. The Chicken Galangal soup is spectacular, and the Lamb and Eggplant is delicious.  Everything is really a taste sensation.  A great place for that special dinner.

Oroville
Li's Cuisine, 2359 - E Myers St., 95965 (530 - 533 - 2609)
I think it compares with some of the excellent restaurants in San Francisco.

San Diego
Chopstix Dim Sum Cafe, 4633 Convoy St., San Diego (619 - 569 - 9171)
The best vegetarian Chinese food in San Diego!

San Francisco and Bay area
Jennie Low's, 38 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley, 94941, (415) 388 - 8868
I nominate Jennie Low's restaurant, nested in the quaint hills of Mill Valley, across the Golden Gate bridge (San Francisco). Her restaurant, which bears her name, features authentic Cantonese cuisine. This restaurant excels in its ability to present a variety of dishes that cater to the discriminating taste of not only Mill Valley residents, but those from San Francisco, and out-of-staters such as myself (from Northern Virginia) Seafood items abound because of the proximity to the bay and California's fresh vegetables compliment all dishes that I consider succulent, pleasing to the eye, and delightfully aromatic. Her chef and cooks are have been with her for years, attesting to their loyalty for producing some of the best Asian cuisine in the Bay area!

Santa Rosa
A B C Chinese Cafe, 3579 Industrial Drive, Santa Rosa, 95401 (707 - 566 - 8722)
Located in the north end of Santa Rosa, in the K-Mart shopping complex. Clean and modest, with excellent Chow mein and Moo shu pork. The house specialties are great also. Closed on Sundays.

Gary Chu's, 611 - Fifth Street, Santo Rosa (707 - 526 - 5840)
Located in downtown Santa Rosa. The restaurant has a very elegant and romantic atmosphere. The Pressed duck and Moo Shu Pork are devine.  Closed on Mondays.

Pho Vietnam, 711 Stony Point Road (707 - 571 - 7687)
They have wonderful soups and noodle salads. The restaurant is located on Stony Point Road and Sebastopol, in the Food for Less shopping complex. It is not in a fancy part of town and the dress is casual. (Note: A review by a restaurant critic is available here.)

Sonoma Country (one hour north of San Francisco, in the heart of California's wine country)
C.K. House, 1525 Healdsburg Avenue, Healdsburg, 95448 (707 - 433 - 4122)
Located in the north end of town. There's a friendly and warm atmosphere, and the staff is great. They have wonderful Egg foo yung and Chow Mein. Open daily.

Stockton
On Lock Sam Restaurant, 333 S. Sutter Street (209 - 466 - 4561)

Dave Wong's Deli, 5620 N. Pershing Avenue (209 - 951 - 4152)

Oregon
Portland
Canton Grill, 2610 SE 82nd, Telephone: (774 - 1135)
I would like to add the Canton Grill as one of the best Chinese restaurants around. They have been in business for 51 years and they are the absolute best. They are famous for their deep-fried shrimp. My parents went there when they opened, my family goes there, now my children. We recommend it to friends, and guess what they now go there. Word of mouth is a great advertisement - because they deliver what you tell.

Washington

Port Angeles
Tendy's Garden, 920 East First Street, 98362, Telephone: 360-452-3322

I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant. The flavors, colors and textures of each dish are strong.  (No buffet). Although still quite young, the New York City-trained chef-owner already has many years experience as a head chef.  He is very personable, modest, and tireless, as most Chinese working in restaurants.  The hospitality-owner, Tendy, also from New York City, has a soft and kind demeanor.  The interesting and inviting decor is comprised of various flora and cultural objects.

Port Orchard
China Sun Buffet, 1948 Lund Avenue, (360 - 874 - 9966)
A wonderful Chinese restaurant, offering a full buffet at very reasonable prices.

Ho ho sik! (Good eating!)
If you have a favorite restaurant you'd like to recommend, please let me know. Anywhere in the world is fine.
