Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: I am a popular Chinese fruit, as popular in China as apples are to Americans. While I have been cultivated in China for over 4,000 years, I was not introduced into the United States until the nineteenth century. While I am commonly called a Chinese date, I have another name that is associated with a popular candy. What is my other name?

TRIVIA ANSWER: The jujube. While it originated in China, today the jujube is popular throughout the world, including Russia, southern Europe, and the United States. In Chinese cooking, jujubes may be added to soups, steamed foods, or featured in desserts. Medicinally, jujubes have been used to treat nerves and as a cure for insomnia. There are several good photographs of the jujube tree here
