Food Trivia Question from the Oriental Oasis Newsletter
TRIVIA QUESTION: Although frowned upon by western physicians, I have been a staple of Asian medicine for at least 2,000 years. While the Chinese refer to me as "Chen," my western name was given to me by a Dutch doctor in the early 1600's. What am I?
TRIVIA ANSWER: Acupuncture. Dr. William Ten Rhyne coined the term acupuncture during a visit to Japan in the seventeenth century. The Chinese word, "Chen" means literally to be pricked with a needle. The Chinese believe that the technique of acupuncture dates back to the Stone Age, when stones were used in place of needles.
