Fun Food Trivia
TRIVIA QUESTION: I am a member of the cabbage species and mustard family respectively. It's thought that I date back to ancient times, probably originating in Asia Minor. In Europe, I was grown primarily in Italy until the sixteenth century, when I became popular throughout France and eventually western Europe. Despite my Asian origins, I was not commonly used in Chinese cooking until recently. What am I?
TRIVIA ANSWER: Cauliflower. The name cauliflower means "cabbage flower," coming from the Latin caulis (stalk) and floris (flower). Nutritionally speaking, cauliflower is high in Vitamin A, and is a reasonably good source of Iron. But despite its health giving properties, the cauliflower has not been treated well in literature: for example, Mark Twain called cauliflower "nothing but cabbage with a college education." When it comes to food, we tend to think of cauliflower being covered with a creamy cheese sauce. However, in Chinese cooking the cauliflower is often featured in stir-fry dishes.
