Food Trivia Question from the Oriental Oasis Newsletter

TRIVIA QUESTION: I am a hot spicy dish made with bean curd and black mushrooms. While both northern China and Szechuan claim to have invented me, I probably originated in the north. According to some sources, my broth used to be made from congealed pig's blood (obviously the version served in restaurants today is very different!) What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Hot and Sour Soup. Thanks to the reader who shared with me the information that Hot and Sour Soup may have been originally made from congealed pig's blood (his son was writing a report on the subject). You can distinguish Szechuan Hot and Sour Soup from its northern counterpart by the taste; the former is generally a spicy dish made with chili oil.
