Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: I was one of the first animals to be domesticated. In China, my meat is so highly esteemed that at one point the Emperor issued a decree ordering Chinese farmers to raise and breed me. In ancient times, I was sometimes buried with my breeder. Christopher Columbus introduced me to the New World, while Hernando de Soto brought me to North America. Today, I have the honor of being the most popular meat in the world. What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Pork. Although beef is eaten in China, cattle have always been valued more as a work animal than a food source. In China, the word "meat" has traditionally been synonymous with pork. Pork is especially popular in southern China; while restaurants often prepare it poorly, sweet and sour pork is an authentic Chinese dish. Nutritionally, pork is low in fat and thought to be a digestive aid.
