Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: Cultivated in Asia since ancient times, my pungent aroma is an indispensable ingredient in Chinese cooking. The first syllable of my English name comes from my spear-like leaves; the second syllable acknowledges that I come from the same family of plants as leeks. Herbalists have long claimed that I have medicinal qualities, including the ability to lower cholesterol, and to prevent blood clotting in patients with heart disease. Nutritionally, I am high in Vitamins B, C, and D. What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Garlic. Considered to be a yang or warming food, garlic has been a basic ingredient in Chinese cooking since ancient times. It is particularly prominent in northern cooking. Interestingly, ancient Buddhist dietary taboos forbid the eating of garlic (along with onion and scallion) as these ingredients fell on the list of the five " strong odored foods."
