Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: I am named after a marine mollusc, which is rather odd since I am a type of fungus. Experts argue over whether I get my name because of my appearance, my slippery texture, or the fact that my flavor tastes slightly of the sea. Cultivated in Asia for hundreds of years, I rated a mention in a poem written during the Sung dynasty. I range in color from white to gray or light pink. What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: An oyster mushroom.  The oyster mushroom, or Pleurotus ostreatus to use its scientific name, is a fan-shaped fungus that does vaguely resemble an oyster. Juicy and with a good flavor, it is eaten raw in salads or cooked in stir-fries. Researchers have found some evidence that a diet including oyster mushrooms may help inhibit tumors. In Chinese medicine, a powder made from oyster mushrooms is used to treat joint pain.
