Fun Food Trivia
TRIVIA QUESTION: Cultivated since prehistoric times, I am a type of nut that comes from the Prunus amygdalus tree. Along with many other exotic fruits, I was introduced into China during the Tang dynasty (618 - 907 AD). However, I have been cultivated in other parts of the world since ancient times. You'll find me mentioned in the Bible: the famous rod of Aaron, which bore flowers and fruit, came from the wood of my tree. I am also found in Greek mythology, where Phyllius dies of a broken heart after being deserted by her lover Demophoon, and in sympathy the gods change her into my tree. A famous Chinese chicken dish bears my name, and so does a chocolate bar. What am I?
TRIVIA ANSWER: The almond. Almonds were probably introduced into China
by travelers along the Silk Route. Almond Gai Ding, diced chicken with almonds, is a
popular Chinese take-out dish. And, of course, there's also Almond Cookies, which can be
found at most Chinese bakeries. (The chocolate bar I referred to in the trivia question is
an Almond Joy). Almonds are also featuring in Indian cuisine, particularly northern Indian
cooking. Healthwise, almonds are high in protein, and contain certain nutrients
that are
thought to lower cholesterol.
