Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: While my wild version is thought to date back to prehistoric times, the bitter taste of my roots means that I was probably valued more as a herb than an edible vegetable. (Source: The Oxford Companion to Food). By contrast, my cultivated form has been eaten and enjoyed for approximately 2,000 years. Rich in Vitamin A, I come in a variety of colors, from orange (the most common) to red, white, and even purple. I am the favorite snack of a certain cartoon mammal. What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Carrots. (The mammal I am referring to is, of course, Bugs Bunny). In China and other parts of Asia carrots are often used to make pickles and relishes. Red carrots are found in Asia, and contain a substance (lycopene) that is thought to help prevent heart disease and certain cancers. "Carrot flowers" are a common Chinese garnish.
