Fun Food Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION: Roughly the size of a small plum, I am thought to resemble a miniature orange. In fact, I was a member of the Genus Citrus until early this century, when it was decided that I rated my own genus (Fortunella). Grown in China since ancient times, I am mentioned in a piece of Chinese literature dating back to 1178 AD. My flavor is an intriguing combination of sweet and tart. You'll often find me served during the Chinese Spring Festival, as my name in Chinese signifies gold, and I symbolize a prosperous start for the new year. What am I?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Kumquat. In contrast to citrus fruits, the whole of the kumquat can be eaten, giving a unique sweet and sour taste sensation (the skin is sweet while the flesh is quite tart). In Chinese cooking kumquats are used in savory dishes, especially chicken. Candied kumquats are quite popular, particularly around Chinese New Year. You'll also find kumquats used in relishes, preserves, and chutneys. Nutritionally, they are loaded with potassium and Vitamin C.
