One of the most popular types of tropical fruit worldwide, coconut is the fruit of the tall coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera to use its scientific name). It would be hard to find a more useful plant. Every part of the coconut palm is put to use, from the wood that is used to build huts, to the white "meat" that is eaten raw, cooked or processed into milk. It is unclear whether coconut's origins lie in the New or the Old world - there is an ongoing argument over whether or not the coconut palm is native to tropical America.

When it comes to Asian cuisine, coconut is commonly associated with Southeast Asian cooking. However, you will find cooks using it to give a different flavor to traditional Chinese dishes.
