Guide Review

In this book, Ellen Blonder and her aunt Annabel Low pay tribute to the home cooked Chinese dishes they enjoyed (but, alas, never really learned to recreate until writing this book) while growing up in North America. Appetizing recipes such as Soy Sauce Chicken and Tomato Beef Chow Mein are intermingled with charming childhood reminiscences.  Ellen's childhood on a farm in California's Sacramento Valley is reflected in the focus on vegetables - there's even a recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes with Flank Steak! The other feature that makes this book stand out are the exquisite watercolor illustrations by Blonder, a professional illustrator, portraying the various recipes and individual ingredients.
